CMC, Inc. is a third-generation mechanical contractor based in Gap, Pennsylvania. What began as a small family-owned hardware, plumbing and heating business has grown into a full-service commercial mechanical construction company serving clients across the region. Today, we’re fully insured, bonded, and equipped to deliver complex plumbing, piping, and HVAC installations for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities.

Our history is built on hard work, craftsmanship, and long-standing relationships. Many of our employees have been with us for decades, and their dedication has shaped the cooperative, team-focused culture we’re known for. The trust we’ve earned from general contractors, owners, suppliers, and partners continues to fuel our growth and guide how we operate.

Our Journey

On February 1, 1942, William S. Horst took over George T. Sellers’ Sons Hardware, Farm Equipment, Plumbing, and Heating business in Gap, PA.

In 1952, William S. Horst announced a significant change for the family business with a new name and vision for the future. That same year, he oversaw the construction of the company’s current location on Chestnut Street in Gap, PA, establishing the foundation for decades of growth and continuity.
In 1965, William Horst passed away while visiting family serving as missionaries in Africa. At just 19 years old, his son J. Linford Horst stepped forward to carry on the family business. His dedication and resilience at such a young age marked the beginning of a new chapter in the Horst legacy.
In 1982, W.S. Horst officially changed its name to Commercial Mechanical Construction, Inc. (CMC). This pivotal transformation was guided by Linford Horst and his new business partner and brother-in-law, Steve Beiler, who recognized the need to evolve with the industry. At this time, the company transitioned from its roots in residential plumbing and heating to a new focus on commercial plumbing and heating, setting the stage for future growth and establishing CMC as a trusted leader in mechanical construction. The first commercial project was Wendy’s in Ephrata, PA.
In 1993, CMC reached a defining moment with the construction of the George C. Delp Pavilion at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lancaster, PA. This project was the company’s largest project to date, showcasing CMC’s capabilities in large-scale commercial plumbing, HVAC, and medical gas systems. Completing this milestone established CMC as a trusted contractor in commercial construction.

Linford’s sons, Christopher and Oliver Horst, grew up working alongside their father and uncle, making them proud third-generation contractors in the family business.

In 1995 Chris officially began working in the business, continuing the Horst legacy. Oliver joined his father and brother, strengthening the family’s role in the company in 2002.

In 2010, Linford Horst retired, closing a remarkable chapter of family leadership and passing the torch to his sons. In 2016, Steve Beiler retired, marking the end of a long standing partnership that helped shaped CMC’s growth and identity.

Chris and Oliver Horst purchased the business, officially becoming the third generation to lead CMC, Inc.

In 1997, Eric Hodgdon began his career at CMC, Inc. as an apprentice. Over the years, Eric became an integral part of the team, helping strengthen CMC’s reputation and capabilities. In 2023, Eric joined Chris and Oliver Horst on the ownership team, marking a new chapter in CMC’s leadership. His addition reflects the company’s commitment to continuity, collaboration, and building on its strong foundation for the future.
In 2024, CMC, Inc. came full circle with another landmark project at St. Joseph Hospital. Over the course of a two-year redevelopment, with 30,000 field power hours to transform the historic site. The redevelopment is turning the hospital into a mixed-use building featuring residential, retail, and commercial space, once again showcasing CMC’s expertise and commitment to shaping the future of the community.
From humble beginnings in 1952 with just 3 office employees and 10 field employees, CMC has steadily grown into a thriving team. Our growth reflects not only the expansion of our services but also our commitment to building a workplace where people can thrive. At CMC, we believe it’s a great place to work—and we’re always looking to add talented individuals to our team.
